Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor Recreation

The MWVCTC continues to build its newest program: Outdoor Recreation. Outdoor Recreation activities “provide a unique developmental context shown to connect adolescents to peer and adult supports, introduce new skills, enable a sense of agency, contribute to personal exploration, and promote higher levels of educational attainment” (Seaman, Sharp, Tucker, Gundy & Rebellon, 2019).

The intent of this program is to create a system of programming to prepare students for the career and workforce opportunities that exist in the outdoor recreation industry, currently and in the future.

  • Outdoor Recreation supports 79,000 jobs and $2.6 billion in wages and salary. There are more jobs in outdoor recreation than in fields such as education, transportation, construction, and even computer technology (from Outdoor Industry Association).
  • Outdoor Recreation accounts for 3.3% of GSP (from The NH Department of Business and Economic Affairs).
  • The legislature passed a budget in 2019 that included the creation of the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Development, becoming the 16th state in the nation to have an office of outdoor recreation (Outdoor Industry Association).

Studies of the outdoor recreation industry in New Hampshire reveal a need for additional skill and knowledge development to keep pace with industry changes and increased involvement in outdoor recreation activities.

Advisory Committee

Advisory committees serve the CTE programs by acting as liaison between the educational institution and the public. The principal purpose for CTE program/advisory committees is to promote greater cooperation between career and technical education and the private sector in preparing individuals for employment, promoting quality career and technical education and making the career technical education system more responsive to the labor market.

CTE program/advisory committees have three major roles. They are to advise, assist and provide support and advocacy for quality career and technical education. It is through these roles that CTE program/advisory committees work with instructors and administrators to initiate policies, procedures and methods that help strengthen and modernize career and technical education.

Improving the quality of career and technical education can be directly linked to the degree of involvement, participation and commitment of the CTE program/advisory committees. If you would like to be involved in shaping the future of education at MWVCTC and have the skills/background to benefit the Aviation & Aerospace Program, please email  for more information.
